1. Boat
You can’t go far without a vessel! Whether you are canoeing or creeking, you need to find a boat that’s appropriate for your body and the water you plan to paddle most frequently. Paddling.com or Canoeing.com can help you choose the boat that’s right for you!
2. Paddle
Once you have your boat, you’ll need to determine what paddle is right for you. Every style of paddling comes with its own, unique paddle, so you’ll want to ensure you’re choosing a blade style and length that is going to help you succeed. Outventurist.com’s Kayak Paddles 101 can help you figure out what you need, while REI Co-Op offers some help about How to Choose Canoe Paddles.
3. Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
A personal flotation device—also known as a PFD—helps you stay afloat in the water in the event you capsize. An essential piece of gear for every kayaker, canoer, and stand up paddle boarder, PFDs are not all created equal. REI Co-Op offers some great advice about choosing the PFD that’s right for you!
4. Spray Skirt
While most often used in whitewater kayaking and sea kayaking, spray skirts can also come in handy for recreational paddlers trying to stay dry. With so many variables to think about, you need to start with knowing your boat size. Olympic Outdoor Center has comprehensive information about choosing either touring kayak spray skirts or whitewater kayak spray skirts.
5. Helmet
Primarily used in whitewater kayaking and creeking, the helmet is perhaps your most important piece of equipment. Jackson Kayak’s Paddle Education breaks down what you should look for when shopping for your helmet.
“Is that it?!” you ask, but the answer is actually NO! Depending on the types of paddling you plan to do, you may need other equipment in the future including:
Anchor
Knife
Tow-Rope
Sponge
GPS/Maps
Compass
Nose Clips
Emergency Flares
Float Bags
Bilge pump
Dry (or semi-dry) suit
Wet suit
Throw Bag
Whistle
Paddle Float
Paddle Shoes
Gloves/Pogies
